Michael Givens

Michael Givens uses art as a refuge. Born in Idaho as one of three children, Michael lost his sister at a young age. This loss became a catalyst of learning. He developed a fascination with how things worked - taking things apart and putting them back together. This intersection of art and science brought him solace; it also ignited his journey as an artist.

Michael didn't recognize what he did as art until high school. Much of his resistance was due to his surroundings - pursuing art was not common in his home town. Eventually, however, his interest and talent won out and he began both performing in theater and creating stage sets.

This led him to intern at the Village Theater in Washington where he built sets and props for four years. Michael is currently working toward his BFA in art and craft at the Oregon College of Art and Craft with a concentration of wood. While he generally works three dimensionally, Michael has enjoyed coming back to illustration - especially drawing for children - as Dr. Seuss was an influential figure of his childhood. Away from the studio, he enjoys being outdoors, climbing around and watching the birds.
